Mentats of Dune. Isn't this plotting all a bit too convenient? Again, my two knocks are: a) he chapters are quite short, giving a sense of a rapid fire storytelling as opposed to a nice, long and drawn out story (although it is a massive space opera), and b) too many pages are wasted retelling a storyline the reader has read either in the novel, or one before it. Mentats of Dune is the second book in the Schools of Dune Trilogy following on from the events of Sisterhood of Dune (Book 1). This in no way affects my review. The book jumps around annoyingly between various sub-plots dealing with various characters --- none of which, unlike the Herbert's "Butlerian Jihad" prequels, are fully or compellingly developed. I highly recommend this book but please do yourself a favor and read Sisterhood first. Brian Herbert has no idea how to create interesting characters, they're all two dimensional caricatures of Hollywood villains (down to the evil pondering of plans while stroking ones beard) and good to the bone heroes. I always have a difficult time rating the Dune books of Kevin James Anderson and Brian Herbert. All my previous reviews of the Duniverse books have commented on the amount of extra irrelevant story lines that do nothing but bloat an already oversized book. Industrialist Josef Venport squares off against Torondo, whose interference thwarts Venport's business interests. I was blown away by this book. The story itself is predictable and doesn't really fit the established history provided in the original novels (no surprise, I suppose). Read this book using Google Play Books app on your PC, android, iOS devices. Mentats of Dune continues the post-Jihad, pre-Frank Herbert story started in previous books. We’d love your help. Having read Brian Herbert's first books of the "Dune" prequels which were hard to put down, I was disappointed in this book in so many ways by contrast. The universe of Dune continues to expand. Anderson and Herbert once again plunge you into the vibrant Dune Universe. Mentats of Dune (Schools of Dune #2) Published March 11th 2014 by Tor Books. But not this one, Mentats of Dune is the first I have been glued to all the way through. I was very surprised. The plot twists surprised me and left me wanting to read right into the next one. Hunters/Sandworms was a utter abomination that should have never been put to paper, the Heroes series was unneccessary dreck, and the House trilogy, while not a completely horrible read into itself, was unneccessary as part of the Dune series and would have been better off if it was its own o. I will be fair to Brian and Kevin and say that this series is definitely better than most of the other McDune books they've written. I really enjoyed this and recommend it to anyone who truly enjoys and understands the Dune Chronicles. All of these groups of people are intertwined and act with their own agendas, often in conflict with others. I absolutely love the entire Dune universe and think these prequel novels are great entertainment. Welcome back. The main characters of Mentats of Dune novel are John, Emma. The final ten pages, in particular, is absolutely nuts. Gilbertus Albans has founded the Mentat School, a place where humans can learn the efficient techniques of thinking machines. Loved the book as it wasn't so slow as the first. Loved the intrigue and power struggle for spice. Every human mind has the innate capacity for greatness. One of the Best Works of Brian Herbert. I wouldn't actually call this one awful, but it's not a good book, and I quit after the first third of it. I only had one complaint with this book and that is the fact that you get recaps of what happened in the previous book as well as in the Legends of Dune series. I've always enjoyed Herbert and Anderson's prequels to the original Dune books. Given the title, I expected a book that would go into the origin and early exploits of the first Mentats ----- the human supercomputers featured in the Dune novels. Mentats of Dune. Indeed, none of the book's characters come across as particularly interesting or likeable. Frist of all, I recieved an ARC of this book in a giveaway thru Goodreads. Really shed some light on the internal workings of the political battles. As with the previous novel in this trilogy, it’s really more like just a part of a long book, as opposed to the second in an actual trilogy. For those versed in both Frank Herbert's Duniverse you will be more than aware of the Bene Gesserit, Mentats, Suk Doctors & Navigators; those not versed in the aforementioned - you’re missing so, so much. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's Navigators of Dune is the climactic finale of the Great Schools of Dune trilogy, set 10,000 years before Frank Herbert's classic Dune. With anti-technology Butlerian forces of Manford Torondo growing in strength and influence, Prince Roderick Corrino sees a threat to the Imperial power of his brother, Emperor Salvador. I wish I could say this book is bad, but terrible would be a more appropriate word. In this one the story is slightly weighted to the story of the Mentats, though really quite equivalent in featuring the Sisterhood as well. Hunters/Sandworms was a utter abomination that should have never been put to paper, the Heroes series was unneccessary dreck, and the House trilogy, while not a completely horrible read into itself, was unneccessary as part of the Dune series and would have been better off if it was its own original series with original characters. When Gilbertus refuses to force his Mentats to swear an oath to the Butlerians, his school is invaded and his past as a "machine sympathizer" is revealed.
